Questions to Ask a Prospective Private Investigator

Hopefully, hiring a Brooklyn private investigator isn’t something you have to do on a regular basis, but when you do require these services, you need to make sure you’re hiring the best. To make sure that you employ the right company or individual, consider asking the following questions.

Do you have references I can contact?  A reputable investigator will be able to provide you with references, as well as samples of their work. When contacting references, it’s important to ask if the PI was thorough and if the client was happy with the services provided. Due to confidentiality issues, you may not be able to go too in depth with questioning, but speaking to previous clients should give you a good idea of how the PI operates.

How do you obtain your information?  There are many gray legal and morality issues when it comes to investigation work. When speaking to prospective PIs, it’s important to set parameters for the investigation so that you don’t’ find yourself involved in a scandal or legal case. Make sure that the PI you work with is aware of the laws in the area that your investigation will take place.

Who will be in charge of my case?  Find out upfront who will be handling your case and insist on receiving information about their background and private investigatory experience. In some cases, private investigators will assign tasks that are not as involved to somewhat less experienced members of their team. Find out exactly who will be working on every aspect of your case so that you can rest assured that you are in good hands.

Are you insured and licensed?  Since every state has different laws and requirements for how private investigators can obtain a license, it’s important to make sure that the PI you are working with has a license in all states that they may need to do work in for your case. Do not hesitate to ask the private investigator for their proof of liability insurance, as well.

Hopefully, you never need to use the services of a private investigator, but, if you do, you want to make sure that your case is being handled by a knowledgeable professional. The answers to the questions above will help you choose a dependable and reputable Brooklyn private investigator and avoid incompetent and inexperienced PIs.
